WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stasha Rhodes, Campaign Director of United for Democracy, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine.
“Today’s ruling preserving the availability of mifepristone is strategically designed to make it seem like this Court – which overturned Roe v. Wade just two years ago – can be “balanced” and “reasonable”. But let’s look at the facts. The Court never should have agreed to hear this case at all, given that it was based on an extreme legal theory with no real basis in the law or Constitution.
“We are grateful millions of women will not lose access to a medication that has been in use for over two decades and is safer than Tylenol, but it is absurd that this case got to the Supreme Court in the first place. The only reason it did is because Donald Trump appointed three MAGA justices to the Court and jammed the lower courts with MAGA judges determined to force a right-wing agenda on everyday Americans.
“The plaintiff in this case, the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, is a sham organization founded in the wake of the Dobbs ruling to keep advancing the far-right’s anti-abortion agenda. It is backed by the Alliance for Defending Freedom, a right-wing legal group that has perfected the tactics of manufacturing lawsuits and judge shopping, creating a pipeline of extreme cases from the lower courts to the Supreme Court.
“These organizations lost today, but they won’t stop. From seeking to undermine federal protections for emergency abortion care to using the lower courts to try to shut down Planned Parenthood in Texas, anti-abortion politicians and right-wing judicial activists are weaponizing our courts to push an agenda the vast majority of Americans reject, including restricting access to reproductive health care.
“United for Democracy will continue calling out this extremism and fighting to stop politicians–and politicians in robes–from taking away our rights and freedoms.”
